Why Culture?

     South Asian culture has always been very important & impactful throughout my life. Just like many other South Asian children growing up, it was very difficult. I had always felt that sometimes my community or the environment around me had a huge lack in South Asian representation. This kind of lack of representation has been impactful on my own self-esteem & and drive to be who I want to be.

     I believe representation in the media is crucial & important. There is & always will be a huge effect behind any kind of representation in the media. This is what helps mold our imaginations & increases our confidence levels to furthermore ourselves in the future.

     Luckily, as I grew up, the media around us slowly became a bit more inclusive. This led to me feeling a sense of belonging & comfort in being myself. I want every single person to feel this same feeling. Disney’s Princess Jasmine and Ravi from Jessie are both great characters— but they do not effectively represent the whole of South Asian culture. This is the reasoning behind this particular section. I want to bring a spotlight & shine it on the beautiful & inspiring, South Asian culture.
